The Largest City in the Northwest in 1863

Idaho City is located about 36 miles northeast of the City Of Boise. It is the county seat of Boise County with a population (2000 census) of 458. Idaho City was a classic gold town. After gold was discovered in 1862 in the Boise Basin, it became home to over 30,000 people trying to strike it rich. The area was one of the largest sources of gold ever found. Many of the old buildings from this pioneer era can be seen today in Idaho City. Idaho City was a typical gold town with a rowdy atmosphere, saloons and some lawlessness. Nevertheless, it florished. Bad luck hit Idaho City with destructive fires. First, in 1865, when most buildings were destroyed. Then fires in 1867, 1868 and 1871 also consumed most of the town. Because of the great wealth in Idaho City from the gold, the town was rebuilt quickly each time it burned. When the gold began to run out and became harder to find, the crowds left as quickly as they came. Many of the old brick homes and businesses as well as the plank boardwalks remain today. The town is an excellent example of historical architecture and the atmosphere of a mid-1800's gold rush town.
